This gallery is our own work, photographed on the jobs themselves. There are no invented before and after stories here and no customer names. What follows is the kind of work that turns up in it, and what is worth looking at in any contractor's photos.

The Basics

These are our own jobs, in our own service area

The photographs in this gallery come from work our own technicians did in Montgomery and Prince George's County. They were taken on those jobs rather than bought from a stock library. That distinction is worth caring about. Stock photography of an immaculate mechanical room in a house that does not exist is cheap and easy to buy, and a fair number of contractor galleries are exactly that. A photograph of a job somebody on this team actually did is a different thing.

What you will not find here is a set of invented before and after stories with customer names attached to them. We do not publish addresses, and we do not put a homeowner's name on a job without asking first. The gallery is the work itself: equipment, ductwork, line sets, mechanical rooms, and the conditions those jobs were done in. The sections below explain which jobs turn up in it most often and what is genuinely worth looking at when you scroll through any contractor's photos.

How It Works

The kinds of work that show up most

The bulk of it is system replacement: furnaces, air conditioners and heat pumps swapped out in the postwar brick ramblers and split levels that fill White Oak, Beltsville and New Carrollton, and in the older colonials and bungalows closer in. Alongside that sit ductless mini split installs in houses that never had ductwork at all, which is a large category around Takoma Park, Brentwood and the Greenbelt co-op rowhomes, where a conventional central air retrofit is impractical and a ductless system is the real answer rather than a compromise.

The rest is boiler and water heater work, including tankless conversions, and duct repair. Duct work photographs badly and matters enormously. A separated joint in a 1950s crawl space, a crushed flex run feeding the far bedroom, a return that was never enlarged when cooling got added in 1990: these are the jobs that fix a comfort complaint no equipment upgrade would have solved on its own. Thermostats, zoning and air handler replacements fill out the remainder.

What Matters

What to actually look for in a contractor's photos

Look at the parts of the picture the contractor was not showing off. Is the line set insulated the whole way to the service valves, or is there bare copper sweating above a finished ceiling? Is the condensate line trapped and pitched, with a secondary drain or a float safety switch on an attic or closet air handler? Is the plenum transition a properly fabricated fitting, or a sheet metal shape improvised on site and held together with tape? Is the electrical disconnect mounted within sight of the unit, where code requires it?

Then look at the site rather than the equipment. Drop cloths and floor protection visible in the frame mean the crew works that way when nobody is standing there judging. A condenser set level on a proper pad with clearance around the coil will still be working in fifteen years. A condenser wedged against a fence with shrubs growing into it will not. None of this requires you to be a technician. It requires you to notice whether the photo shows care or just shows a finished box.

In Practice

Why the same replacement looks different from one street to the next

A furnace changeout in a 1960s Beltsville rambler with a full basement and a straight duct run is a different job from the same equipment going into a Cheverly story and a half cape where the air handler lives in a knee wall attic. One has room to work and gravity to carry the condensate away. The other has a hatch, a plywood platform, a condensate pump, and a finished ceiling underneath that cannot be allowed to stain. The equipment listed on the invoice might be identical in both houses.

That is why comparing photos across several jobs is more useful than holding one photo up against an ideal. A downtown Silver Spring or Bethesda condo fan coil in a closet with almost no service clearance, a Potomac attic air handler serving a zoned second floor, a Bladensburg basement where the water table dictates how high the equipment has to sit: each carries constraints the homeowner never sees. What you are really looking for is whether the constraint was handled or quietly ignored.

What a photograph cannot tell you

A photo cannot show you whether a load calculation was done, and sizing is the single decision that determines whether a system will actually be comfortable. It cannot show static pressure, refrigerant charge verified by superheat and subcool, or a combustion analysis on a gas appliance. It cannot show whether the permit was pulled or whether the inspection passed. A beautiful looking install can still be two tons oversized and short cycle its way through every humid July afternoon for the next fifteen years.

So use the gallery for what it is good for: evidence of the kind of work a company does, the conditions it works in, and the standard it holds itself to once the drywall goes back up. Then ask the questions a photograph cannot answer. Any contractor should be able to tell you how the equipment was sized, what was measured after the install was finished, and where the permit and inspection stand on your particular job.

How long does a typical system replacement take?

Most straightforward changeouts, new equipment onto existing ductwork and an existing line set, run a single working day, with the crew arriving in the morning and the system running before they leave. Jobs that include new ductwork, a line set replacement through finished walls, an electrical upgrade, or relocating equipment can run into a second day. We tell you which of those your house is when we write the estimate.

Do you pull permits for the work you do?

Where the jurisdiction requires one, yes, and equipment replacement usually does. In Montgomery County that runs through the Department of Permitting Services, and in Prince George's County through DPIE. We handle the application and meet the inspector. A contractor who suggests skipping the permit to save you a little time is telling you something about how the rest of the job will go, and it can complicate a future home sale.

What happens to my old furnace or air conditioner?

We take it with us. Refrigerant has to be recovered before an air conditioner or heat pump comes out, which is federal law under EPA Section 608 rather than a courtesy, and it is done with recovery equipment on site. The metal then goes to a scrap recycler. You should not be left with an old condenser sitting beside the house waiting on a separate pickup that never quite happens.

Do you protect floors and clean up afterward?

Yes. Drop cloths and floor protection go down along the path between the door and the equipment before anything gets carried in or out, because a furnace and a condenser both have to travel through your house. Old equipment, packaging, cut sheet metal and line set offcuts leave with the crew. The mechanical room should look better when we finish than it did when we arrived.

Is there a warranty on your workmanship, not just the equipment?

Yes, and the two are separate things worth understanding. The manufacturer warranty covers the parts inside the equipment and generally requires registration plus documented annual maintenance. Our labor warranty covers the installation itself: the connections, any ductwork we modified, the electrical and the commissioning. Ask any contractor to put both on the written proposal, with the terms and the duration spelled out rather than described verbally.

Will you have to cut into my walls or ceilings?

Sometimes, and you hear about it before we start rather than after. A straight equipment changeout usually does not require it. Running a new line set for a ductless head, adding a return where there never was one, or replacing duct inside a finished chase can mean opening drywall. When it does, we show you where and how large, and we agree who is patching and painting before any cutting begins.

Can I stay in the house while the work is happening?

Yes, and most people do. Expect the heat or cooling to be off for a good part of the day, some noise, and people moving in and out with equipment and tools. The gas or the breaker feeding the system will be off for stretches of it. If someone in the house is sensitive to dust or to temperature swings, say so when you schedule and we will plan the sequence around it.

Do you photograph my house for this gallery?

Only with your permission, and only the work itself. No street view, no house number, no name, no address. Most of what you see is equipment, ductwork and mechanical rooms, which tells another homeowner what they need to know without identifying you at all. If you would rather we photographed nothing on your job, say so at the start and that is the end of it.
