A single family home in Silver Spring or Takoma Park pulls that air across a filter, over a cold coil, through decades of ductwork, and back into the rooms where your family sleeps. Whatever the system picks up along the way (tree pollen in April, basement dampness in July, dust from a 1962 crawlspace) gets redistributed every time the blower runs.

Walkthrough and measurement

We walk the house with you, check filter size and rating, read relative humidity upstairs and in the basement, inspect the coil and drain pan, and look hard at return air capacity before recommending anything.

When testing is the right call we collect air quality and humidity readings in the areas that concern you, then explain what those numbers mean for your specific house instead of a regional average.

You get more than one option, with the tradeoffs stated plainly and no pressure attached. Most filtration cabinets, humidifiers, UV lights and detectors are installed in a single visit.

After the install we confirm airflow is still where it belongs, set humidifier controls for the season, show you the filter change interval, and leave written documentation for your records.

Methodology

How we actually do it.

We start in the house, not in a catalog. That means walking the basement and the crawlspace, looking at the filter slot to see what size and MERV rating the system was actually built for, reading relative humidity in the living space and on the lowest level, and checking how much return air the equipment is getting. Static pressure matters here more than most homeowners expect.

Drop a dense filter into a system with undersized returns, common in 1950s and 1960s Montgomery County ranchers and Cape Cods, and you can starve the blower, freeze the coil and make comfort worse while believing you improved the air. So we size filtration to the duct system you have, and if the returns cannot support it we say so and price the return work separately.

Air quality testing, when you want it, gives us particulate and humidity data instead of assumptions. Yosef came up as a service technician and built this company in 2014 around that habit: explain the reading, explain the options, let the homeowner choose.

Equipment

What you can install.

Filtration is the usual starting point. A one inch fiberglass filter stops lint and little else, while a four or five inch media cabinet in the MERV 11 to MERV 13 range captures a large share of fine particulate, including much of the PM2.5 range that carries pollen fragments and combustion soot. True HEPA filtration is a portable or bypass application, not a drop-in replacement for a standard filter rack, and we will tell you which your system can support.

Whole-home humidifiers handle the winter side: forced air heat in a Maryland January routinely drives indoor relative humidity into the teens, which dries out sinuses, hardwood and trim. A humidifier tied into the supply plenum holds the house closer to the 35 to 45 percent range. UV lights target biological growth on the evaporator coil and drain pan, which is where high summer dew points give mold something to live on. Carbon monoxide detection belongs in every home with a gas furnace, boiler or water heater.

Project Day

The hours and the hand-off.

Most air quality visits start as a conversation. You tell us what you notice (dust settling a day after cleaning, a musty smell when the air conditioning kicks on, dry winter air, a cough that only happens at home) and we work backward from the symptom. Expect us to ask when the house was built, whether the basement has ever taken water, and whether anyone has modified the ductwork.

Expect us to open the air handler. Most filtration and humidifier installs are a single visit of a few hours, and we cover floors and clean up before we leave. If we find something outside the scope of air quality, a cracked heat exchanger or a failing condensate line, we show you and give you the choice.

Warranty coverage

Air quality equipment carries manufacturer warranties that vary by product. Media filter cabinets and UV systems are typically covered on parts for a set term, whole-home humidifiers often longer, and Carrier equipment installed by an authorized dealer follows Carrier's registered warranty terms. Registration matters more than people realize.

Most manufacturers require the product to be registered within a window after installation to earn the full term instead of the shorter base coverage, so we handle registration and hand you the paperwork. Our own labor warranty is stated on the proposal before you sign, not buried afterward. If equipment we installed fails inside its coverage, we file the claim with the manufacturer rather than sending you to a phone number.

Available incentives

Indoor air quality accessories usually sit outside the large equipment rebate programs, but they often ride along with work that does qualify. Pepco and BGE both run residential efficiency programs under Maryland EmPOWER, and Home Comfort Air Services participates in the Pepco and BGE residential rebate programs. Those incentives generally attach to qualifying heat pumps, air conditioners, furnaces, smart thermostats and, in some program years, duct sealing.

Washington Gas offers its own residential incentives for gas heating equipment. The federal Section 25C credit that used to apply to this equipment ended for anything placed in service after December 31, 2025. We can point you to the current program pages and provide the model and AHRI documentation you need to file. Program terms change from year to year, so confirm eligibility before you count on it.

Does a better furnace filter really improve air quality?

It helps, within limits. Filters are rated by MERV, and a higher MERV catches smaller particles. The catch is airflow: a thick restrictive filter jammed into a one inch slot raises static pressure, starves the blower and can freeze the coil. The better answer is usually a four or five inch media cabinet, which gives you higher filtration and lower resistance at the same time.

Why is my house so humid in summer even with AC?

Usually oversized equipment. In this climate the moisture load is large, and a system that cools the air quickly and shuts off never runs long enough to remove it. Duct leakage in a hot attic and outside air infiltration add to the problem. Right sized variable speed equipment, a dehumidification setting on the thermostat, or a whole house dehumidifier are the fixes that actually work.

Do UV lights in the ductwork actually do anything?

A coil sterilization lamp aimed at the evaporator coil does one thing well: it keeps biological growth off the wet coil and the drain pan, which is exactly where musty smells start during a humid summer. That is worth having. Claims about sterilizing all the air passing through the duct are much weaker, because the contact time as air moves by is very short.

What causes dry air and static shocks in winter?

Cold outdoor air holds very little moisture, and when it leaks into the house and warms up, the relative humidity falls. A drafty older home dries out fastest. Below roughly 30 percent you get static shocks, dry skin and shrinking wood trim. A whole house humidifier tied into the furnace adds moisture at the source, and air sealing reduces how much dry air comes in.

How do I know if my indoor air is a problem?

Start with what you can observe: dust settling right after you clean, musty smells when the system starts, allergy symptoms that ease when you leave the house, condensation on windows, or a room that always feels stuffy. Air quality testing measures particulates, humidity and carbon monoxide so you are working from numbers instead of a guess. That tells you which fix is actually worth buying.

Where should carbon monoxide detectors go in my house?

On every sleeping level and near the fuel burning appliances, following the manufacturer instructions for mounting height. Maryland requires detectors in homes with fuel burning appliances. Replace them on schedule, since the sensors expire in roughly seven to ten years and the date is printed on the housing. Detectors are the backup. Annual combustion testing on the furnace, boiler and water heater is the primary defense.

Is an air purifier better than fixing the ductwork?

Usually the ductwork comes first. If return ducts run through a dusty crawlspace or a hot attic and leak, the system pulls that air into your house continuously, and no filter downstream fully undoes it. Sealing leaks, correcting an unfiltered return and sealing the filter slot changes what enters the system at all. After that, filtration and purification work from a much cleaner starting point.

Will an air cleaner help with pollen season around here?

Spring in the Mid-Atlantic loads the air with tree pollen for weeks, and a high efficiency media filter or an electronic air cleaner in the system captures a large share of it whenever the blower runs. Setting the fan to circulate rather than auto keeps air passing through the filter between cooling cycles. Keeping windows closed during peak counts does as much as any equipment.
