A modern heat pump heats and cools the same house on one system, and in Maryland winters it does that job well. We install, repair and replace ducted heat pumps across Silver Spring and the surrounding Montgomery and Prince George's County communities.

Why this matters

The work behind the work.

Heat pumps have a reputation problem in this area, and it comes almost entirely from equipment installed decades ago. An older heat pump loses capacity as the outdoor temperature drops, hands off to electric resistance strips, and produces an electric bill that people remember for years. Current cold climate equipment behaves differently.

Variable speed compressors hold usable capacity well below freezing, and the winter design temperature used for the Washington and Baltimore region sits in the upper teens, comfortably inside the operating range of modern systems. Home Comfort Air Services installs, repairs and maintains ducted heat pumps, ductless mini-splits and dual fuel systems throughout our service area.

Yosef started the company in 2014 after coming up as a technician, and heat pump work rewards that kind of experience: charge, airflow and control setup all matter more here than on a straight air conditioner, because the same equipment has to perform in July and in January. We work on split-levels with marginal ductwork, brick colonials with unconditioned attic runs, and condo and townhouse closets in Greenbelt and College Park where a compact air handler is the only thing that fits.

Load calculation and fuel comparison

We measure the home, run a Manual J calculation, inspect ductwork and electrical capacity, then compare heat pump operating costs against your current heating fuel before recommending anything.

System design and proposal

You get written options covering ducted, ductless or dual fuel, with SEER2 and HSPF2 ratings, backup heat strategy, any duct or panel work required, financing, and applicable rebates.

Installation

We set the outdoor unit on a raised pad clear of snow and ice, braze line sets under nitrogen, pressure test and deep vacuum the system, and correct condensate and electrical deficiencies as we go.

Commissioning and controls

We verify airflow and static pressure, confirm charge by superheat and subcool, test the reversing valve and defrost cycle, set the balance point and auxiliary heat lockout, then show you how to run it.

Methodology

How we actually do it.

The first question on a heat pump project is not which brand, it is what the house needs and what it costs to heat it. We run a Manual J load calculation, then compare operating costs honestly against your current fuel.

In a home with Washington Gas natural gas service, a dual fuel setup that runs the heat pump through most of the season and switches to the gas furnace on the coldest nights is often the better answer, and we will say so rather than selling a full electric conversion you did not need. Ductwork gets measured, because heat pumps deliver air at a lower supply temperature than a furnace and undersized returns show up immediately as rooms that feel drafty.

On service calls, diagnosis covers both modes. We check the reversing valve, the defrost board and sensors, the outdoor coil condition, refrigerant charge by superheat and subcool, and whether auxiliary heat strips are engaging when they should instead of running constantly. A heat pump that quietly heats on strips is a bill problem long before it is a comfort problem.

What you can install.

Ducted heat pumps replace a conventional AC and furnace pairing and use the existing duct system, which makes them the straightforward path in most single family homes here. Ductless mini-splits handle additions, finished attics and basements, sunrooms and condos where running duct is impractical, and they give you independent control room by room. Dual fuel pairs a heat pump with a gas furnace and switches between them at a balance point we set for your house and your utility rates.

Efficiency is rated in SEER2 for cooling and HSPF2 for heating, and cold climate rated equipment publishes its capacity at low outdoor temperatures, which is the number that actually matters in February. New systems are moving from R-410A to lower global warming potential refrigerants such as R-454B, which changes service parts and handling but not how the system runs for you.

Backup heat still deserves attention: strips sized correctly and staged properly, or a gas furnace as the second stage. We also handle thermostats and controls, which is where a lot of heat pump comfort complaints are actually solved.

The hours and the hand-off.

A heat pump behaves differently from a furnace and it helps to know that going in. Supply air feels cooler to the hand even when the house is holding temperature, cycles run longer, and the outdoor unit will periodically go into a defrost cycle, steaming and running the fan in a way that looks alarming and is completely normal. We explain all of it before we leave.

On service calls, expect the technician to test the system in both heating and cooling modes rather than only the one that failed, because the reversing valve, defrost control and charge affect both. Auxiliary heat gets checked specifically, since strips running when they should not are the usual cause of a surprising Pepco bill. Repairs are priced before work begins, and military members and seniors receive 10 percent off any repair. Warranty coverage

Heat pump equipment carries manufacturer parts coverage that varies by brand and model, with compressors often covered longer than other components. Nearly every manufacturer requires registration within a limited window after installation to receive the full published term, so we register your system and give you the confirmation rather than leaving it in a folder. As a Carrier authorized company we process Carrier warranty claims directly, and we service other major brands as well.

Our workmanship coverage is separate from the factory warranty and is stated in writing on your contract, backed by our 100 percent satisfaction guarantee. Because a heat pump runs year round, annual maintenance matters more than it does on a cooling only system, and some manufacturers require documented service to honor a claim. Work is performed under Maryland HVACR license MD70918. We are NATE certified, an ACCA member, and BBB accredited with an A+ rating.

Available incentives

Heat pumps attract more incentive money than any other residential HVAC equipment right now. Home Comfort Air Services participates in the Pepco and BGE residential rebate programs, run under Maryland EmPOWER, which offer rebates on qualifying high efficiency ducted and ductless heat pumps. Most of Montgomery and Prince George's County is Pepco territory, with BGE serving portions to the north and east, and the program you qualify for follows the utility on your electric bill.

The federal Section 25C credit that used to apply to this equipment ended for anything placed in service after December 31, 2025. Dual fuel projects may also touch Washington Gas rebate programs on the furnace side. Qualifying model lists, thresholds and amounts change from year to year, so we confirm current terms during the proposal and provide the AHRI certificate and itemized invoice you will need.

How does a heat pump heat a house in winter?

It moves heat instead of making it. A reversing valve flips the refrigerant cycle so the outdoor coil absorbs heat from the outside air, even at freezing temperatures, and the indoor coil releases it into the house. Because it moves heat that already exists rather than burning fuel, it delivers more heat energy than the electricity it consumes. That is why heat pumps work well in a Maryland winter.

Why is my heat pump blowing lukewarm air?

That is normal behavior. A heat pump delivers supply air in the mid nineties to low hundreds, which is cooler than your skin, so it feels lukewarm even while the house is heating. A furnace delivers much hotter air in short bursts. Longer, steadier cycles are how a heat pump works. If the house genuinely is not keeping up, the charge, the airflow and the defrost control are worth checking.

My outdoor unit is steaming and iced over, is that bad?

Steam and a brief burst of cold air means the defrost cycle is running, which is normal on a damp winter day. The unit reverses briefly to melt frost off the outdoor coil, then returns to heating. What is not normal is ice that never clears, ice covering the whole cabinet, or a unit sitting in a block of ice. That points to a failed defrost board, a bad sensor or a low charge.

What is auxiliary heat and why is my bill higher?

Auxiliary or emergency heat is the electric resistance heat strip inside the air handler. It runs when the heat pump alone cannot keep up, or when the thermostat calls for it too aggressively. Resistance heat costs far more per unit of heat than the heat pump does, so bills climb fast on a Pepco or BGE meter. Bad thermostat staging, a failed sensor or a low charge all make it run more.

How is heat pump maintenance different from AC maintenance?

A heat pump runs year round, so it sees roughly twice the runtime of a cooling only system and needs two visits. Beyond the usual coil, charge and electrical checks, we test the reversing valve, the defrost board and its sensor, and the auxiliary heat strips and their sequencer. We also confirm the outdoor unit sits high enough on its stand to drain properly during winter defrost cycles.

Should I get a dual fuel system instead of a heat pump?

Dual fuel pairs a heat pump with a gas furnace and switches over to gas below a set outdoor temperature. It makes sense when you already have Washington Gas service and a furnace worth keeping. Modern cold climate heat pumps hold usable capacity well below freezing, so many homes in this area do fine without the furnace. Your gas rate, your electric rate and the equipment decide it.

Do heat pumps qualify for rebates in this area?

They are the equipment these programs most want to fund. Pepco and BGE run residential rebate programs under Maryland EmPOWER covering qualifying high efficiency heat pumps. The federal tax credit that used to apply to these ended after 2025. Eligibility is tied to specific efficiency ratings and model combinations, so the AHRI certificate matters. We confirm current program terms during the proposal rather than guessing.

Should I turn the thermostat down at night with a heat pump?

Big setbacks work against a heat pump. When you ask for several degrees back at once in the morning, the thermostat brings on the electric auxiliary strips to recover quickly, and that costs more than the heat pump would have used running steadily. A setback of a degree or two is fine, and a thermostat with real heat pump logic manages recovery without leaning on the strips.
