How Often to Change Your HVAC Filter

There is no single right answer, and anyone who gives you one without asking about your house is guessing. Filter life depends on thickness, what is in your air, and how hard the system is running. Here is how to find your own interval and buy the right filter.

The Basics

The honest answer depends on your filter and your household

Anyone who says every 90 days without asking a single question about your house is guessing. The real interval depends on three things: how thick the filter is, what is floating around in your air, and how many hours the system actually runs. A 1 inch filter in a Bethesda colonial with no pets, through a mild spring, may still look clean at 90 days. The same filter in a College Park rental with two shedding dogs and a gravel driveway out front can be packed gray in five weeks.

Add up your own load honestly. Shedding pets, anyone smoking indoors, drywall dust or floor sanding anywhere in the house, a construction site or road work on the block, and anyone in the household with asthma or seasonal allergies all push the interval shorter. Runtime matters just as much as dust. July and August in this area run a cooling system close to continuously, and a January cold snap does the same to a furnace. April and October may barely run the equipment at all. Count runtime months, not calendar months.

How It Works

Typical intervals for 1 inch versus 4 and 5 inch media filters

The standard 1 inch filter that slides into a slot at the furnace or drops into a return grille is the most common and the shortest lived. Plan on 30 to 60 days during heavy cooling or heating season, and 90 days at the absolute outside in a clean house through a mild stretch. The cheap spun fiberglass panel is not really filtering your air at all. It exists to keep large debris off the blower wheel, and it should be swapped closer to every 30 days.

A 4 inch or 5 inch media filter is a different animal. It sits in a dedicated cabinet bolted to the furnace or air handler, and because the pleats are deep it holds far more dust before it restricts anything. Those typically run 6 to 12 months. Most homes land near 6 months with pets in the house and 9 to 12 without. Do not stretch a media filter to two years just because it still looks passable from the front. The loaded face is the side you cannot see.

How to actually check instead of guessing

Pull it out and hold it up to a light bulb or a window. A filter you can still see light through across most of its area has life left in it. One that blocks the light, where the pleats are packed gray and dust has bridged across the folds, is finished. Do this on a phone reminder the first two or three times and you will learn your own house very quickly. Write the install date on the cardboard frame in marker so the next check is not a guess.

Check monthly through July and August, and again in January, because those are the months the system runs hardest and loads a filter fastest. If you want a number instead of a look, a technician can measure static pressure across the filter with a manometer during a tune up. That reading tells you exactly how much resistance the filter is adding to the system. It is also the measurement that settles whether the filter you have been buying is right for this equipment in the first place.

Finding the size, and getting the arrow pointed the right way

The size is printed on the cardboard edge of the filter you are pulling out, usually as three numbers like 16x25x1 or 20x25x4. That is the nominal size, and it is what you buy by. The actual cut size is often a fraction smaller and many brands print that too, in smaller type. If the old filter is gone, measure the slot opening in inches, height by width, then the depth of the slot. Take a photo of the frame with your phone before you throw the old one away.

Every filter has an arrow printed on the frame, and it must point in the direction the air is moving, which is toward the furnace or air handler blower, never away from it. If the filter sits in a return grille in a wall or ceiling, the arrow points into the wall or ceiling. Backward is not harmless. The wire backing that supports the pleats ends up on the wrong side, so the media can bow, collapse under suction, or get pulled loose and drawn into the blower.

What a clogged filter does to airflow and to the equipment

A furnace or air handler is a fan pushing air through a fixed amount of duct. Choke the intake and the fan moves less air, and everything downstream suffers for it. In cooling, low airflow across the indoor coil drops the coil temperature until it frosts, then ices over solid. Now you have no cooling, water dripping where it should not be, and a compressor that may be getting liquid refrigerant returned to it. That is one of the more expensive parts on the system.

In heating, the same restriction traps heat inside the furnace. The high limit switch trips to protect the heat exchanger, the burners shut down while the blower keeps running, and you get short cycling and cool air out of the registers. Repeated limit trips stress the heat exchanger over time, and a cracked heat exchanger is the one furnace failure nobody wants, because it usually means replacing the furnace. A filter costs a few dollars. A heat exchanger or a compressor does not.

The trap of buying the highest MERV on the shelf

MERV is the rating for how small a particle a filter captures, running from about 1 up to 16 in residential sizes. Higher sounds better, and for an allergy household it genuinely can be. But a filter is a restriction, and a denser filter is a bigger restriction. Plenty of duct systems around here, the 1950s brick ramblers and the 1920s bungalows with one undersized return in a hallway, have no spare static pressure to give away. Dropping a MERV 13 into a thin slot on that system starves the blower.

A practical rule: in a 1 inch slot, MERV 8 to 11 is the safe band for most residential systems. If you want MERV 13 or better, the right way to get there is a 4 inch or 5 inch media cabinet, which has several times the surface area, so it filters finer while adding less resistance than a thin filter of the same rating. If you are not sure what your system can handle, ask for a static pressure reading. That number settles the argument.

Can I wash and reuse a disposable pleated filter?

No. Pleated paper filters are not washable. Water collapses the media and leaves it damp, which puts a wet surface right in the airstream and invites mold growth. There are permanent washable electrostatic filters built for it, but they need to dry completely before they go back in and they generally capture less than a good pleated filter. If yours came in a cardboard frame, it is disposable.

Does a dirty filter really raise my electric bill?

Yes, though not dramatically on its own. A restricted filter makes the blower work against more resistance and makes the system run longer to reach the same temperature, so a Pepco bill in August creeps upward. The bigger cost is usually not the meter. It is the repair when a frozen coil or a tripped limit switch turns a five dollar part into a service call in the middle of a heat wave.

How many filters does my house actually have?

More than most people expect. Many homes have one at the furnace or air handler plus one or more behind return grilles in hallways or ceilings, and some systems have a filter at every single return. Walk the house once, find all of them, and save the sizes in a note on your phone. A forgotten ceiling return filter is a very common cause of mysterious weak airflow.

Should I change the filter before or after summer?

Both. Put a fresh one in at the start of June before the humid stretch settles in, check it in mid July, and install another around November before the heating season. In this climate the two hard runtime seasons are what load a filter, so bracket each of them. April and October are the months a filter coasts, which is exactly when people remember to change it.

There is a gap around my filter. Does that matter?

Yes. Air always takes the easy path, so a loose fit means unfiltered air bypasses the filter entirely and dumps dust straight onto the blower wheel and the indoor coil. A coil packed with dust loses capacity and is expensive to clean properly. Buy the correct nominal size rather than a smaller one that slides in easily. If the slot itself is oversized or the access door does not seal, that is worth correcting.

Is a more expensive filter always better for my system?

No. Price mostly tracks MERV rating and depth, and a higher MERV in a thin filter means more resistance rather than better performance for your equipment. The right filter is the finest filtration your system can move air through comfortably, and that depends on your ductwork and blower, not on the price tag. A static pressure measurement answers the question for your specific house.

What if I forgot and it has been a year?

Change it now and look hard at what comes out. If the old one is caked and the registers have felt weak for a while, have someone check the indoor coil and the blower wheel, because a year of bypass dust generally lands on both. Then set a recurring monthly reminder on your phone. Nothing is gained by feeling bad about it. The fix is a few dollars and five minutes.

Do UV lights or air purifiers replace the filter?

No. A UV light treats the coil surface and some airborne biological growth. A media or electronic air cleaner handles particles. Neither one removes the need for a filter that keeps dust off the blower wheel and the indoor coil. If anything, adding indoor air quality equipment makes a properly sized, properly seated filter more important, because the whole system depends on clean airflow to work.
