HVAC Work You Can Do Yourself, and the Work You Should Not

Plenty of HVAC advice online is either selling you something or scaring you into calling. This page tries to be neither. Some of this work is genuinely yours to do, and doing it well saves real money. A short list is not, and the reasons behind each one are worth understanding.

The Basics

The work that is genuinely yours to do

Start with the list that belongs to you. Changing the filter is the highest value thing a homeowner does, and nobody needs to be paid to do it. Thermostat batteries are next, and they cause more January no heat calls than most people would believe: a thermostat with dying batteries can behave strangely for weeks before it quits, losing its schedule or failing to call for heat on the coldest morning. Keeping supply registers open and return grilles clear of furniture is yours too, and closing vents in unused rooms is a myth worth abandoning.

Clearing the outdoor unit is also yours. Rake leaves out of the coil, cut the shrubs back, keep two feet of space around it, and kill the power at the disconnect first. Use a garden hose on gentle spray, not a pressure washer, which flattens the fins. Resetting a tripped breaker once is reasonable too: fully off, then firmly on. If it trips again, stop. A breaker is telling you something downstream is drawing too much current, and repeated resets remove the protection while the fault gets worse.

How It Works

Anything involving gas, without exception

Gas piping, gas valves, gas connectors and burner assemblies are off limits, and not because they are difficult. The issue is that the failure mode has no recoverable middle ground. A slightly loose electrical connection announces itself with a warm outlet or a flickering light. A slightly loose gas connection announces nothing until there is enough gas in the room to find an ignition source. Testing a joint properly takes the right leak detection method, thread compound rated for gas, correct torque and a pressure test. Getting three of those four right is still a failure.

The same applies to anything that changes how a gas appliance burns. Adjusting a gas valve, changing an orifice, converting between natural gas and propane, or repeatedly relighting a pilot that keeps going out are all combustion work. Combustion is a chemistry problem with an exact air to fuel ratio, and verifying it takes a combustion analyzer reading the flue gases, not a look at the flame color. Incomplete combustion produces carbon monoxide, which you cannot smell, and a furnace can look and sound completely normal while doing it.

What Matters

Refrigerant is federally regulated, and it is never a top up

Refrigerant is the clearest legal line of the group. Under the federal Clean Air Act, refrigerants are regulated, and buying or handling them requires EPA Section 608 certification. Venting them to the atmosphere is illegal. That is why a homeowner cannot simply buy a cylinder of what most residential systems run on. The cans sold for car air conditioning are a different product for a different system, and using something like them on a home system is how coils get contaminated and compressors get destroyed.

The deeper problem is conceptual. A sealed refrigerant system does not consume refrigerant. It is a closed loop, so if the charge is low there is a leak, and adding more without finding that leak means paying for refrigerant that ends up in the air. Charging is also measured work rather than filling until the air feels cold: a technician verifies superheat and subcooling against the manufacturer specification for the conditions that day. Overcharging damages equipment as surely as undercharging, and it kills compressors, usually the most expensive part in the system.

In Practice

Sealed combustion chambers and cracked heat exchangers

The sealed section of a furnace or boiler, where the flame burns and the exhaust travels, is not a homeowner access panel. It is sealed to keep combustion gases separated from the air you breathe. The heat exchanger is the metal wall doing that separating: hot exhaust on one side, house air on the other, heat passing through, gases never mixing. Opening that section, disturbing its gaskets or reassembling it incorrectly compromises the separation, and so does drilling into it or sealing a suspected crack with tape or high temperature compound.

A cracked heat exchanger is the reason this matters. Metal that has been heating and cooling for twenty years develops stress fractures, and when it does, exhaust gas can enter the supply air stream. The symptoms are vague: headaches, nausea, drowsiness or flu like feelings that ease when you leave the house and return when you come home. Confirming a crack takes camera inspection and often combustion testing with the blower running. If a technician condemns a heat exchanger, that system stays off. It is not something you postpone through one more winter.

Worth Knowing

Electrical work inside the equipment itself

A breaker in the panel is one thing. The inside of an air handler, furnace or condensing unit is another. Capacitors in an outdoor unit hold a real charge after the power is off, enough to hurt you, and they have to be discharged before anything else is touched. Control boards, transformers, contactors, limit switches and pressure switches all sit within reach of each other, and a wire on the wrong terminal can destroy a board that costs more than the diagnostic visit. Line voltage and twenty four volt control wiring share the same cabinet.

Safety switches are the part most often defeated by well meaning DIY. The rollout switch, the high limit, the pressure switch and the condensate float switch each exist to shut equipment down when one specific unsafe condition occurs. Jumpering one out because the system keeps stopping does not fix anything. It removes the alarm and lets the real problem, which might be a blocked flue or a failing inducer motor, continue unsupervised. A system shutting itself off is diagnostic information, not an obstacle.

The Detail

The absolute rule for a gas smell or carbon monoxide

If you smell gas, leave the house. Take everyone with you including pets, and get outside and away before you do anything else. Do not flip a light switch on or off, do not unplug anything, do not use the garage door opener, and do not stay inside to hunt for the source. Any of those can create a spark. From outside, and only from outside, call 911 and then the gas company. Washington Gas maintains an emergency line for exactly this. Do not go back in until someone with instruments tells you it is safe.

Carbon monoxide is the same procedure with one difference: there is nothing to smell. If a CO alarm sounds, or if several people in the house have headaches, nausea or drowsiness that improves outdoors, treat it as real. Get everyone outside, call 911 from outside, and do not go back in to find the source or to open windows first. There is no version of this where investigating first is the right call, and ventilating before responders arrive can make the source harder to locate. Fresh air and a phone call, in that order.

Can I add refrigerant to my own air conditioner?

No. Refrigerants are regulated under the federal Clean Air Act, and buying or handling them requires EPA Section 608 certification. Beyond the legal side, a sealed system does not use refrigerant up. If the charge is low there is a leak, and adding more without finding it puts refrigerant into the atmosphere and leaves you with the same problem again in a few months.

Is it safe to relight my furnace pilot light?

On older equipment with a standing pilot and clear instructions printed on the unit, following those instructions once is usually reasonable. The larger question is why it went out. A pilot that will not stay lit points to a failing thermocouple, a draft or venting problem, or a dirty pilot assembly, and repeated relighting hides all three. If it goes out twice, stop relighting it and have it looked at.

How many times can I reset a tripped breaker?

Once. Turn it fully off, then firmly back on, and note the date. If it trips again, leave it off. The breaker is doing its job: something downstream is drawing more current than the circuit is rated for, and that is usually a failing compressor, a seized blower motor or damaged wiring. Repeated resets remove the protection while the underlying fault keeps getting worse.

What are the symptoms of a cracked heat exchanger?

They are vague, which is exactly the danger. Headaches, nausea, drowsiness or flu like symptoms that improve when you leave the house and return when you come home. Sometimes a flame that shifts when the blower starts. None of that is proof, and none of it is something to test yourself. Confirming a crack takes camera inspection and combustion testing. If one is confirmed, the system stays off.

I smell gas. What is the very first step?

Leave. Take everyone including pets and get outside and away from the house. Do not touch a light switch, unplug anything or use the garage door opener, because any of those can spark. From outside, call 911, then the gas company. Washington Gas has an emergency line for this. Do not go back in for any reason until someone with instruments tells you it is safe.

Can I clean my own ductwork or blower wheel?

Vacuuming the register faces and the visible few inches inside is fine and worth doing. The blower wheel is different. It sits behind the filter in the air handler, it is usually secured to the motor shaft, and a wheel reassembled out of balance will vibrate, wear its bearings and get noisy. It also means opening a cabinet with line voltage inside. Leave that one for a service visit.

Why can a technician buy refrigerant when I cannot?

Because EPA Section 608 certification requires passing an exam on recovery, leak repair and safe handling, and suppliers are required to sell only to certified buyers. The rules exist because refrigerant vented to the atmosphere causes real environmental damage, and because incorrect charging destroys equipment. Certification also covers the recovery equipment used to pull refrigerant out properly instead of releasing it during a repair.

Is a yellow furnace flame something to worry about?

It is worth a call, though flame color alone is not a diagnosis. A natural gas burner should run mostly blue, and yellow or lazy flames can point to incomplete combustion, a dirty burner or a venting problem. The reliable answer comes from a combustion analyzer reading the actual flue gases. Do not adjust anything yourself, and if a carbon monoxide alarm ever sounds, leave first and call from outside.
