The duct, though, is often original. It was laid out for a heating-only system, then asked to carry cooling, and a heat pump asks more of it than a furnace did, because supply air arrives around 95 to 105 degrees rather than 130 plus, so low airflow reads as a house that never quite gets warm. Full basements finished long after construction added load the equipment was never sized for, usually with supply registers and no return.

How the appointment runs.
We run the diagnostic in whichever mode the weather allows and then check the other. That means charge by superheat and subcool, temperature split across the indoor coil, static pressure on both sides of the air handler, amp draw on the compressor and the strip heaters, and a look at the defrost cycle, the reversing valve and the outdoor sensors.
On a White Oak rambler the air handler is usually in the basement or a utility closet with decent room, but the duct is old enough that we check joints and the return path while we are there. My White Oak house is all electric. Is a heat pump still the best option?
For most of these houses, yes. Compared with an electric furnace or baseboard heat, a heat pump moves heat instead of making it, so it delivers several times the heat per kilowatt hour in the temperatures we actually spend the winter in. The alternative is bringing gas service to the house, which is a large expense for a modest rambler.
What is a balance point and why does my installer keep mentioning it?
It is the outdoor temperature at which the heat pump alone can no longer match the heat loss of the house. Below it, auxiliary heat fills the gap. If the equipment is undersized or the house is leaky, the balance point is high and the strips run often. Correct sizing, sealed duct and proper thermostat setup push it lower.
The outdoor unit is covered in ice. Should I shut it off?
A light frost that clears during a defrost cycle is normal. A solid block of ice on the coil is not. Switch the thermostat to emergency heat so the house stays warm, then call us. Running a heat pump with a blocked coil risks the compressor. The cause is usually a defrost board, a sensor, low charge or standing water under the unit.
