The complaint that brings most Wheaton heat pump calls is not that the system stopped. My electric bill jumped but the house feels cool. What is happening?

That combination almost always means the auxiliary electric heat is carrying the house while the compressor is not contributing. Backup strips use a great deal of power and produce air that feels lukewarm at the register. The underlying cause is usually a defrost fault, low charge, an iced outdoor coil or a thermostat configured to call for backup too eagerly. All four are findable, and three of the four are ordinary repairs.

There is ice on the outdoor unit. Is that normal?

A light frost that clears on a defrost cycle is normal in winter. A solid block of ice at the base of the unit is not, and on these wooded lots it is often drainage rather than refrigerant: leaf litter has filled the base pan, defrost melt water cannot escape, and it refreezes. Do not chip at it. Turn the system to emergency heat to keep the house warm and call us.

One mini-split head blows warm while the others heat fine. Is that head bad?

Usually not. On a multi-zone system a single misbehaving head more often points to its branch valve, the charge on that circuit, or a communication fault between the head and the outdoor unit. Swapping the head first is the expensive way to find that out. We read line temperatures and control signals across every zone, because the repair is frequently outside at the condenser.
