A Wheaton no-heat call in January is usually a furnace that has been quietly asked to do something awkward for years. The houses went up between the late 1930s and the early 1960s with coal or oil heat, converted to gas, and have since been through two or three generations of furnace, each one smaller and more efficient than the last. The duct stayed where it was.
The chimney stayed where it was. What changes with each replacement is how much hot flue gas goes up that chimney, and a masonry flue built for a much larger appliance runs cold, condenses, and slowly takes itself apart from the inside.
Meanwhile inside the house the Cape Cod geometry works against the furnace in winter the same way it works against the air conditioner in summer, just in reverse: heat rises into the rooms that are already losing it through the roof deck, the downstairs runs cold, and the thermostat on the first floor keeps calling. The typical Wheaton furnace sits in a basement or a crawl space in a Cape Cod or rambler through Wheaton Hills, Chestnut Hills, Carroll Knolls, Wheaton Forest or Glenmont, feeding a trunk that was sized for gravity heat. Where the furnace still vents into the chimney, the liner is the thing to look at. - Flame sensors and hot surface igniters failing on 1990s and 2000s furnaces in Wheaton Forest and Glenmont, so the burner lights, drops out after a few seconds and locks out.

How the appointment runs.
A Wheaton no-heat visit starts with the sequence of operation, because the furnace will tell you where it stopped if you watch it try. Call for heat, inducer, pressure switch, igniter, gas valve, flame proving, blower. Whichever step it fails at points at the fault, and we test that circuit rather than replacing parts in order of price.
Then we look past the appliance: static pressure and return air, because a starved furnace short cycles and cooks its own heat exchanger, and the vent, because in these houses the chimney is a live part of the system. We check draft rather than assume it, inspect the connector and the flue, look at the heat exchanger with a camera where access allows, and read carbon monoxide in the living space.
If the water heater has been orphaned on that flue we will say so, since it is a safety item and not an upsell. You get the diagnosis and the price before work starts, and igniters, flame sensors, pressure switches, capacitors and inducer motors are usually handled on the first visit.

Common questions.
The furnace lights and then shuts off after a few seconds. What is that?
That is the control failing to prove flame, and the usual cause is a dirty or failing flame sensor, sometimes a grounding problem, sometimes a burner that is not lighting cleanly across all ports. It is generally an inexpensive repair. What matters is finding out why, because a burner running dirty enough to foul the sensor is worth a proper look rather than a wipe and a hope.
My downstairs is cold while the bedrooms are too warm. Is the furnace too small?
Usually it is fine. In a Cape Cod or split-level heat rises into rooms that are already losing it through the roof, so the upstairs coasts while the thermostat downstairs keeps calling. Replacing the furnace with a larger one does not change the distribution. We measure airflow at the registers and static pressure, and the answer is normally balancing, a return correction or zoning rather than more capacity.
I smell gas. What should I do?
Leave the house first. Do not switch anything on or off, including light switches, and do not use the phone inside. From outside, call Washington Gas and let them make the house safe. Once they have cleared it, call us and we will find what failed and repair it. That order matters, and no diagnostic appointment is worth reversing it.
