Common questions.
One zone stopped cooling and the others are fine. What usually causes that?
Most often a damper motor that has stopped responding, a failed zone control board, or a thermostat that lost its connection to the panel. The compressor and coil are frequently in perfect condition. That is why we test the zoning hardware before quoting anything on the equipment, since a fault in the controls and a failing system are very different conversations.
Do I have to service both of my air conditioners if only one failed?
You do not have to, but we will look at both while we are there. In a Potomac house the second system often carries a slow refrigerant leak or a loading condensate drain that nobody notices, because the areas it serves are used less. Finding that during a visit you already scheduled is far cheaper than discovering it on the next 95 degree weekend.
