That stain is the classic attic unit failure: the primary condensate drain clogged, the pan filled, and the water found the plaster before any safety device stopped the system. We clear the drain, test the float switch that should have caught it, and check whether the secondary pan has rusted through, because a failed pan will do it again. In these houses the ceiling below is usually plaster and lath, which is why catching it early matters more here than in drywall construction.
