My boiler is fifty years old and still works. Should I replace it?
Not automatically. A cast iron sectional boiler can run a very long time, and the sections are often the healthiest part of the appliance. What we look at is the burner and controls, the combustion numbers, whether the block is leaking or heavily scaled, and what it costs to run each winter. If it tests clean and vents properly, one more season is honest.
Can I put a condensing boiler on my old cast iron radiators?
Sometimes, with a real caveat. A condensing boiler only reaches its rated efficiency when the water returning to it is cool enough to condense, roughly under 130 degrees. Large old radiators often run cooler than people expect, but not always, so we compare radiation to the actual heat loss first. It also needs plastic venting out a wall and a condensate drain.
Why are my upstairs rooms cold when the boiler is clearly running?
On hot water it is usually air in the loop, low system pressure, or a circulator that failed or was undersized during an old conversion. How do I tell whether I have steam or hot water heat?
Look at the boiler and the radiators. A steam boiler has a sight glass, a glass tube on the side showing a water line, and its radiators have a single pipe connection with an air vent on the side. A hot water system has a circulator pump, a pressure gauge reading in the tens of PSI, an expansion tank, and radiators usually piped at both ends. Steam radiators hiss and sometimes bang; hot water systems are generally quiet. If you are unsure, photograph the boiler and the top of one radiator when you call and we will tell you before we arrive.
What should I do about the insulation on my old boiler pipes?
If it is intact and undisturbed, generally leave it alone. Material of that age can contain asbestos, and the risk comes from disturbing it rather than from its presence. We do not remove it, test it, or work in a way that disturbs it, and if a repair or a replacement cannot avoid it we stop and tell you so it can be tested and, if necessary, removed by a licensed abatement contractor. That sometimes adds a step before we can proceed, and it is the correct order to do things in.
Can I keep the radiators and still add air conditioning?
Yes, and it is one of the more common projects in these houses. The heating system stays exactly as it is and the cooling is a separate system layered alongside it. The realistic options are the same three that apply to any un-ducted house here: conventional ducted equipment where usable chases and attic space exist, small diameter high velocity tubing that threads through framing with minimal plaster damage, or ductless heads.
