On steam we read the sight glass, test the low water cutoff, check the pressuretrol setting, inspect near boiler piping and the header, and check radiator traps and main vents before touching a control.
On hot water we check system pressure at the gauge, expansion tank charge, the pressure reducing valve, the air separator, circulator operation, zone valves and the aquastat, then purge and bleed loops that are air bound. Combustion analysis at the flue, a draft check on that old masonry chimney, and a carbon monoxide reading in the living space happen on every gas fired visit.

My Cheverly house still has radiators. Should I convert to forced air?
Only if there is a reason beyond the age of the boiler. Converting means running ducts through a house that has no chases for them, which usually costs closet space and produces compromised runs. That is exactly why so many already converted Cheverly houses have undersized returns today. If the radiation and piping are sound, replacing the boiler and adding ductless cooling is often the better project.
How can I tell whether I have steam heat or hot water heat?
Look at the radiators and the pipe. A steam radiator has one pipe entering at the floor and an air vent on the side, and the boiler will have a sight glass showing a water line. What causes the banging noise from my radiators on cold mornings?
On a steam system it is almost always condensate trapped where steam wants to travel, which happens when a radiator loses its pitch back toward the pipe, when a return is partly blocked with rust, or when a main vent has stopped working. On hot water it is usually air in the loop or pipe expanding against a hanger. Neither needs a new boiler to fix.
