How the appointment runs.
A Brentwood boiler call usually starts with a cold room and a boiler that is running, which points at distribution rather than at the appliance. We check system pressure at the gauge, the expansion tank charge, the pressure reducing valve, the air separator and the circulator, then work the loop, purging and bleeding radiators from nearest to farthest and freeing valves that have not moved in years.
On steam we read the sight glass, test the low water cutoff, and check radiator pitch and vents. Gas fired equipment gets combustion analysis at the flue, a draft check on the chimney and a carbon monoxide reading in the living space. Access is the local variable. Common questions.
Can I add air conditioning without giving up my radiators?
Yes, and in these houses it is usually the right approach. A ductless heat pump puts a wall or ceiling head in the rooms that need cooling, with a small line set running to an outdoor unit, and it does not touch the boiler or the radiation. On a narrow Brentwood lot the question is where the outdoor unit sits and how the line set routes.
The relief valve on my boiler keeps dripping. Is that dangerous?
It is a symptom worth taking seriously, though usually not an emergency. A relief valve opens when system pressure passes its setting, and on old hot water systems that is almost always a waterlogged expansion tank or a fill valve feeding too much water in. The valve is doing its job. Replacing it without correcting the pressure problem just moves the drip to a new valve.
Would a high efficiency boiler work with my old cast iron radiators?
Possibly, with an honest caveat. A condensing boiler only reaches its rated efficiency when return water runs cool enough to condense, roughly under 130 degrees, and that depends on having enough radiation for the heat loss. Oversized old radiators often help. It also needs plastic venting through a wall and a condensate drain, which a shallow Brentwood basement may not accommodate easily.
